Walk participants make a symbolic visit to the Piskariovskoye Memorial Cemetery in Leningrad to pay their respects to the victims of the Nazi siege of the city during World War 2. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the city (mostly of cold and starvation) during the siege, including 420,000 civilians.
